B22 LED Filament GLS Bulb 8W 1050lm - Warm White 2700K - Energizer

This is a bayonet cap LED bulb in the familiar GLS shape, the rounded pear outline most British ceiling pendants and table lamps were built around. It draws 8W and gives 1050 lumens, with a colour temperature of 2700K, a warm white close to the light an old tungsten bulb gave. The envelope is clear and uncoated, so the LED filament rods inside are on show rather than hidden behind a diffusing finish. The cap is B22, the push and twist bayonet type rather than a screw, so check the old bulb has two small pins on a smooth metal base.

Because the bulb is clear it works best where it is meant to be seen: an open shade, a pendant, a bare flex drop over a table, or a lamp whose shade lets light escape top and bottom. The beam angle is 320 degrees, so light spreads almost all the way round rather than being pushed in one direction, which is what a general room light needs. Clear bulbs do sparkle. Where one sits at eye level in a room people sit still in, a shade that screens the direct view is kinder; in a hallway or over a stairwell, that sparkle is part of the appeal.

The pack gives this as a 75W replacement and prints a 15,000 hour lifespan, shown on the box as 15 years. The energy rating is E. It is not dimmable, so keep it on a plain on/off switch: a non-dimmable lamp on a dimmer circuit tends to flicker or buzz and can fail early. How do I know if my fitting takes a B22 cap?

Pull the old bulb out and look at the base. A B22 bayonet has a smooth metal barrel with two small pins on opposite sides, and it pushes in and twists. A screw thread means you need an E27 instead.

How bright is 8W in old money?

It produces 1050 lumens, and the pack gives it as a 75W replacement. In practice that is a strong main light for a living room, bedroom or kitchen pendant rather than a soft accent bulb.

Can I put it on a dimmer switch?

No. The specification lists it as non-dimmable, so it belongs on a standard on/off switch. On a dimmer circuit a non-dimmable lamp often flickers or buzzes and its working life can be cut short.

What does 2700K warm white actually look like?

It is the yellow-toned light people remember from tungsten bulbs, flattering on wood, brick and warm paint colours. Choose it for rooms you relax in, and a cooler 4000K where you want crisper task light.

Does it throw light in every direction?

Close to it. The beam angle is 320 degrees, so light leaves almost the whole envelope and fills a shade evenly, unlike a reflector lamp that aims a narrow cone downwards.

How long should one last?

The pack prints a 15,000 hour lifespan and describes that as 15 years. Running roughly three hours a day, that works out at around a decade and a half before replacement.
