Energizer LED GLS Bulb B22 4.2W Opal Non-Dimmable - Daylight 6500K

This is the classic GLS bulb shape on a B22 bayonet cap, the push and twist fitting most older UK ceiling roses, pendants and table lamps take. It draws 4.2W and gives 470 lumens, and the pack rates it as a 40W replacement, so it is a straight swap for an old 40W incandescent with no change to the fitting itself. The light is 6,500K daylight, a clean bluish white at the cool end of the scale rather than the yellow of a filament lamp. The soft white finish spreads that light across a wide 240 degree beam instead of throwing it forward in a cone.

Daylight white is a working light. It suits kitchens, utility rooms, garages, workshops, home offices and hobby benches, anywhere you want to pick out fine detail and judge colour honestly. Whites read as white under it, which helps with sewing, model making, reading small print and matching paint or fabric. It is less comfortable in a bedroom or a sitting room, where most people settle on something nearer 2,700K. The 240 degree spread means the bulb fills an open shade, an uplighter or a plain batten fitting evenly, and it will not leave a dark ring on the ceiling the way a narrow spot can.

The bulb is not dimmable, so give it an ordinary on and off switch; on a dimmer circuit it may flicker, buzz or fail early. How do I know if my lamp takes a B22 cap?

Look at the base of the old bulb. A B22 has a smooth metal cylinder with two small pins on the sides and pushes in with a quarter turn. If the base has a spiral thread instead, you need an E27 screw cap and this one will not fit.

Is 470 lumens bright enough to replace my old 40W bulb?

Yes. The pack rates this as a 40W replacement, and 470 lumens is the usual output for that. If the room felt dim on a 40W incandescent, step up to a higher lumen bulb rather than expecting more from this one.

Can I put it on a dimmer switch?

No. It is non-dimmable, so it needs a plain on and off switch. Fitted to a dimmer circuit an LED of this type can flicker, hum or shorten its own life, even when the dimmer is turned fully up.

What does 6,500K daylight actually look like?

It is a crisp, slightly blue white, much cooler than the 2,700K warm white most people use in living rooms. It reads as clean and alert, which is why it works so well over worktops, benches and desks.

Where can I safely fit an IP20 bulb?

IP20 means it has no protection against water, so keep it to dry indoor locations such as ceiling pendants, wall lights, table lamps and enclosed hallway fittings. It is not suitable for outdoor or exposed positions.
