Description

This is a pygmy bulb, the short stubby lamp with a small screw cap that goes into appliance lamps, night lights and compact decorative fittings. Inside the clear glass sit two upright LED filament strips rather than a coiled tungsten wire, so the light comes from a soft line rather than a single hot point. It draws 2W and gives 240 lumens at 3,000K, a warm white that reads yellow rather than blue, and the cap is E14, the smaller of the two screw sizes, marked SES on many older bulbs. The pack gives it as a replacement for a 20W incandescent.

Pygmy lamps are bought for the fittings a standard bulb is simply too big for: cooker hood lamps, salt lamps, small wall lights, and bedside pieces with narrow shades. Before ordering, take the old bulb out and look at the cap. E14 is a screw thread roughly 14mm across; if yours has two small pins that push in and twist, that is a bayonet cap and this will not fit. The 320 degree beam sends light out in almost every direction rather than forward in a cone, which suits a shade, a glass diffuser or an open fitting where the bulb is on show.

There is no dimming: the specification gives Dimmable as No, so run it from a plain on and off switch rather than a rotary or trailing edge dimmer, which can make a non-dimmable LED flicker or buzz. The pack prints a 15 year lifespan, and the energy label rates it E at 2kWh per 1,000 hours.
