A table lamp, 35cm wide, in silver. At 35cm wide it is about the width of a laptop.

A cool metal finish reflects white rather than yellow, which sharpens a room instead of warming it. Beside a window it disappears; against a dark wall it draws a bright outline. Velvet is a pile fabric, and the pile is why it changes colour as you move past it — light down the nap reads dark, light against it reads bright. That shimmer is the whole reason to choose it. It comes with its shade, so there is no second purchase to make it usable.

E27 lampholder, 1 of them up to 10-12W LED, and no bulb in the box. Because it is E27, bulbs are stocked everywhere and you are never tied to one supplier. It is not dimmable, which means you choose the warmth at the bulb rather than at the switch: a 2700K bulb will do more here than a dimmer would. The cable is black, with an in-line switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

The base is felted, which matters if it is going on a polished or waxed surface. It weighs 2.72kg, which is enough to stay put when the flex is tugged. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.
