Description

The Elbu is an occasional armchair with a low curved back, short rolled wings and four hand carved mango wood legs. The upholstery is a charcoal jacquard woven from cotton and linen, a flecked and slightly ribbed weave that reads as a deep soft grey rather than a flat black. The back and the sides are left deconstructed: the outer faces show the mango wood frame with hemp panels set inside it, rather than a second layer of the jacquard. A line of dark studs runs along the wooden rail below the seat.

It is 75cm to the top of the back and 66cm front to back, and the seat sits at 40cm. Against the pale mango wood of the frame and legs the charcoal weave reads very dark, and those two tones are the whole of the chair: there is no third colour anywhere on it. Turned into the room, what shows from behind is the frame and the hemp panels rather than a plain back.

The fabric is a cotton and linen jacquard, upholstered by hand, and the frame is solid mango wood with the legs carved by hand. The side panels are hemp. Mango trees are grown first for fruit and cropped over a number of years; once they stop bearing they are felled so that new trees can go in, and the timber is sold on, which gives the growers a second return from the same trees. The Elbu runs to two armchairs, this one and a second upholstered in plain linen.
