A lampshade, 35cm wide, in green. The shade is the part of a light that changes the room, and it is also the part that is easiest to get wrong: too small and the fitting shows, too large and it dominates. The bottom diameter is the figure to hold against the space, not the height. At 35cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Changing a shade changes a room without touching the wiring, which makes it the cheapest worthwhile change in a house you have just moved into.

Natural sits with almost anything, which is the practical argument for it: it does not commit the room to a colour scheme the way a painted finish does. Linen has a longer, stiffer fibre than cotton, so it drapes in heavier folds and creases more decisively. Both are the point: linen looks relaxed rather than crisp, and it is meant to. It is lined in white, PVC: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. Shade reducer: Yes.
