Description

A lampshade, 50cm wide, in natural. Getting a shade wrong is almost always a fit problem rather than a taste problem. Check the ring your fitting takes before the diameter, then hold the bottom width against the space rather than the height. At 50cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door. A shade is the cheapest way to change a light. The fitting stays, the wiring stays, and the character of the room moves — which is why replacing shades is usually the first thing worth doing in a house you have just moved into.

Natural sits with almost anything, which is the practical argument for it: it does not commit the room to a colour scheme the way a painted finish does. The slubs in linen — the thick and thin places in the yarn — are not flaws. They are why the same colour reads differently across a surface. It is lined in white, PVC: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. Shade reducer: Yes.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well. Dust is the whole of the maintenance and it matters more than it sounds: an even film of dust on a shade dims a room by more than most people would guess, and a soft brush restores it in a minute.
