Description

Lighting does not get much more pared back than this: a small ceiling fitting in matt black, 10cm across, holding an E27 lamp and doing nothing to distract from it. The matt finish keeps highlights and reflections down, so what you notice is the light rather than the fitting itself. It will dim, given a suitable lamp and a compatible dimmer, neither of which comes with it.

We would put this where a hanging light is simply the wrong answer: a low hall ceiling, a landing, a boot room, or a stairwell where heads pass close. It suits flats and cottages with tight headroom, and it works well in numbers, spaced along a corridor or repeated through a run of small rooms that want the same quiet fitting throughout. An LED lamp of up to 20W is what we would fit, and the choice of lamp does most of the styling work here, whether you want soft warm light or something brighter and crisper for a utility area.

The black finish is even and free of sheen, which helps it settle against white plaster as well as darker ceilings. Keep it indoors and dry; steamy bathrooms and covered porches are outside what it is made for. For cleaning, switch off, wait for the lamp to go cold, then go over the fitting with a dry duster or a barely damp cloth, avoiding sprays and cream cleaners that dull a matt surface.
