Description

A ceiling box is the small metal cover that finishes a pendant where the flex meets the ceiling, and ours is a neat satin nickel disc, 11cm across and shallow enough to sit almost flat. It comes with its working parts included: a cable grip to take the strain off the flex, an earth wire and a three pole terminal block. Nothing about it asks for attention, which is exactly the point.

We reach for this when a pendant is being built up from separate pieces, or when a plain plastic rose has started to look tired under a good shade. It suits hallways, kitchens, bedrooms and stairwells, anywhere the ceiling end of a pendant sits in plain view rather than half hidden. It is not a light in its own right and takes no lamp of its own; the light comes from whatever hangs below it. It is a Class 1 part, so an earth connection is needed.

Satin nickel is the quieter of the silver finishes, a soft grey lustre that holds its looks better than a mirror polish and shows far fewer marks day to day. A dry cloth is all it wants; skip metal polishes, solvents and cream cleaners, as they thin the plating and leave the surface patchy. It carries a one year warranty. The finish keeps easy company with cool greys, chrome switch plates and warm oak alike.
