This is the small round ceiling box that finishes a pendant off at the top, sold here in polished nickel with a bright, mirror-like face that picks up whatever light is around it. It measures 11cm across, and the shallow body keeps it sitting close against the ceiling line rather than standing proud of it. Inside are the working parts you would want: a cable grip, an earth wire and a three pole terminal block.

It earns its place wherever a pendant, a rise-and-fall fitting or a length of bare flex needs a tidy point of arrival overhead. That takes in kitchens with a run of lights over an island, hallways, bedrooms and stairwells, and it suits anyone rehanging a shade and wanting the top of the drop to look considered rather than an afterthought. We keep this one on the shelf for exactly those jobs, where the existing plate has been painted over, has gone tired, or simply reads as the wrong colour against a new fitting. It belongs in dry rooms indoors, so keep it to living space rather than a shower area or an open porch.

The polished nickel reads slightly warmer than chrome, which is what makes it sit happily next to nickel switch plates and brushed metal handles. A soft dry cloth now and then is all the upkeep it asks for; polished faces mark easily, so leave cream cleaners and abrasive pads well away from it.
