The Dreifa is a small, shallow disc for the ceiling, only 11cm across, that gathers a flex and its mains connection under one tidy cover. Inside there is a three pole terminal block, a cable grip to hold the weight of the flex, and an earth wire ready to be joined. The face is painted a flat matt white with no gloss to catch the light, so it reads as part of the ceiling rather than as a fitting in its own right.

This is the part most people are after when they are putting a pendant together themselves from a flex set and a shade of their own choosing. It also works simply as a quiet, plain cover over a hallway, a kitchen or a bedroom. We reach for it where a broad ceiling rose would look heavy for the room, or where a run of drops is going in above a table and the eye should stay on the shades rather than on the ceiling. It suits anyone who would rather the ceiling stayed calm and uncluttered.

White is the version that leaves us most often, since it sits happily against almost any painted ceiling. To keep it looking right, run a dry cloth over the cover now and then; matt paint will burnish and mark if you go at it with cream cleaners or solvents, so leave those in the cupboard. It carries a one year warranty.
