Dreifa Ceiling Box 11.2cm - Copper

This is the small copper ceiling box from the Dreifa range, a shallow round cover just over 11cm across that sits close to the ceiling and keeps the connections of a hanging pendant tidy and out of view. It comes with its own components: a cable grip to take the weight of a flex, an earth wire and a three pole terminal block. The profile is deliberately low, so what the eye reads is a neat copper circle rather than a housing.

We reach for these when someone is putting a pendant together from parts and wants the ceiling end to answer the flex, the lampholder and the shade rather than vanish behind a white plastic rose. Copper suits warm rooms: a kitchen island, a run of lights above a dining table, a landing where the ceiling is close enough for the detail to register. It also earns its place where several pendants hang at different lengths, since the same copper disc above each one pulls the group together. Indoors and dry is where it belongs.

The finish is a warm copper across the face and the rim, and the piece itself is very light in the hand. A soft cloth run over it when you dust the fitting below will keep it clear; fingermarks are better buffed away than treated with metal polish, which will dull the surface over time. It carries a one year warranty. It measures 112mm in diameter and stands 25mm high, so it reads as a shallow disc rather than a deep box. It weighs 0.21kg.

Does it take a bulb?

No. It is a non-electric component with no lampholder of its own; the lamp belongs to the pendant or fitting it sits above.

Can it be used in a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20, which means dry indoor rooms such as kitchens, hallways, landings and living spaces.

How should the copper be cleaned?

A soft dry cloth is all it needs. Avoid abrasive pads, cream cleaners and metal polishes, as these can cut into the copper finish.
