Description

The Dharini is a linen globe. Panels of natural linen are stretched over a wire frame and joined along vertical seams, so the shade reads as a sphere made of segments rather than a smooth ball, and the seams show as pale ribs against the linen. The linen is undyed and slightly open, so lit from inside the panels glow and the bulb is visible through them as a soft bright point. It measures 51cm across and 54cm tall.

This is an easy fit shade: it goes onto a pendant that is already there, or onto a pendant fitting bought separately, with no electrician needed. That is the reason to choose it over a hard wired fitting, and it is why the only thing to check before buying is the drop already hanging in the room. At 51cm across it wants space around it, over a bed, a table or a stairwell rather than in a narrow hall. It is made for ceiling use only and will not sit on a lamp base. It weighs 1.5kg.

Linen is one of the oldest woven fibres and it is both hard wearing and recyclable. The panels are cut and shaped over the frame by hand, so the seams fall a little differently on every shade. The Dharini range also holds a small size with an antique brass fitting. No flex, fitting or bulb is included.

Frequently Asked

Do I need an electrician?

No. It is an easy fit shade, so it goes onto a pendant that is already hanging, or onto a pendant fitting bought separately.

Can it go on a table lamp?

No. It is made for ceiling use only.

Will the bulb show through?

Yes, as a soft bright point. The linen is light enough to glow rather than block, so a frosted or opal bulb sits more comfortably behind it than a clear filament.

How much room does it need?

51cm across and 54cm of drop, plus clearance below. Over a bed or a table that is comfortable; in a narrow hallway it is not.

How do I care for it?

Wipe it gently with a microfibre cloth with the light switched off. No harsh chemicals and no abrasive cleaners.
