Description

This is a lamp base pared right back: a low cylinder in satin nickel with the lampholder rising straight out of it and a rotary dimmer set into the body. At 70mm across it claims almost no room on a surface, and the bulb does the talking. Fit a fat globe, a squirrel cage or a plain pear-shaped lamp and the whole character shifts with it. Turning the rotary control winds the light up or down, so it can sit at a low glow or run near full brightness, provided the lamp itself is dimmable.

We reach for this one where a conventional table lamp would look bulky: a bedside shelf, the corner of a desk, a deep windowsill, the end of a run of books on a sideboard. It suits anyone who has already chosen a decorative filament or opal globe and wants as little as possible built around it. In a bedroom the rotary control earns its keep, since the level can be taken right down without any dimmer on the wall. The E27 lampholder takes up to 40W, which covers any LED lamp you are likely to pair with it.

The satin nickel has a soft grey sheen that shows fingerprints and dust far less than polished plating. It is double insulated, and it belongs in dry rooms indoors, well away from splashes and damp corners. For upkeep, wait until the lamp has cooled, switch off at the socket, then take a dry cloth over the base and around the dimmer knob; leave sprays and metal polishes alone, as they will dull satin plating in time. It carries a one year warranty. We also stock the same base in sand black and pearl black if you want it to disappear against a darker surface. Lamps are not included.
