Description

The Darfano is a solar wall light with a motion sensor: a crisp black rectangular box with a round diffuser set into its underside, so the light falls down the wall rather than into anyone's eyes. It measures 14.5cm long and 5.5cm high, and stands 12cm out from the wall. Inside sits an integrated solar LED rated at 6.5W, giving 930lm of neutral white light at 4000K. The IP54 rating means it is protected against dust and splashing water, so it lives outdoors on a house wall or a garden wall through the year.

Because it needs no mains supply, it suits the spots where there is no power to hand: beside a front or back door, along a side passage, on a garden wall above a border, or on the side of a shed or garage. The motion sensor brings the light on when someone approaches, so the path to the door is lit just as you arrive with your hands full of shopping, and the garden stays dark the rest of the time. Fit two or three along a wall and they wash it with soft pools of light from above, picking out planting and the texture of render. The panel charges from daylight, and as general guidance it does best in an open, sunny spot.

The body is plastic in a black finish, and plastic will not rust, which counts for a light that stays outside all year. Power is stored in a Li-ion battery of 2000mAh, and the light is dimmable. It weighs 0.54KG packed, and the installation instructions come as a download. Our tip: before you fix it, look at the wall through the day and choose the stretch that catches the most sun, since a well placed panel is the best start a solar light can have.
