Description

A cushion cover 60cm by 40cm, woven on a handloom in jute and cotton. The ground is a coarse, open weave in a pale soft grey, and the pattern is worked over it in muted colours: a row of rust sprigs and cream blocks across the top, a line of plum motifs on ochre stems through the middle, and a band of green leafy sprigs along the bottom edge. A single column of green and plum runs up the left-hand side, so the design does not repeat symmetrically across the face.

Sixty by forty is a lumbar size, low and wide, so it sits in front of the squares on a sofa rather than behind them, among covers in the same range. The motifs stand slightly proud of the ground instead of lying flat in it, so they read at an angle as well as face on. At 0.56kg the cover has real weight for its size.

The yarn is jute and cotton. Jute is a rain-fed crop that needs little in the way of fertiliser or pesticide and spins into a strong thread, and the cotton is what softens it. Every cover is woven, braided and stitched by hand in India. Dantri is made in a 50 x 50cm square as well. The cover is supplied on its own; feather cushion inners are made separately.
