Description

A square cushion cover, 50cm by 50cm, woven on a handloom in jute and cotton. The ground is a coarse open weave in a pale soft grey, and the motifs are worked over it in muted colours: rust zigzag sprigs and cream blocks across the top, a band of plum shapes on ochre stems through the middle, and green leafy sprigs along the bottom. A column of green and plum runs up the left-hand edge, so the face does not repeat symmetrically.

Fifty centimetres square is the size most sofa cushions are cut to, so this is the one that sits at the back of a group with smaller covers in front of it. The motifs stand slightly proud of the ground rather than lying flat in it, so the face reads at an angle as well as straight on. It sits on a sofa with the 60 x 40 in front of it, and at 0.54kg it has real weight for its size.

The yarn is jute and cotton. Jute is a rain-fed crop that needs little in the way of fertiliser or pesticide and spins into a strong thread, and the cotton is what softens it. Every cover is woven, braided and stitched by hand in India. Dantri is made as a 60 x 40cm rectangle as well. The cover is supplied on its own; feather cushion inners are made separately.
