Description

A low lounge chair on an acacia frame, with the seat and back slung in leather rather than upholstered over padding. The back uprights are turned round and run on past the top rail; the arms, legs and stretchers are square in section. The back is a single buffalo hide, seamed down the middle, hung over the top rail and held by leather tabs that wrap round the uprights. The seat is a second hide stretched between the side rails and hanging in a shallow curve.

The chair stands 76cm tall, 67cm wide and 73cm deep, and the seat sits at 38cm. That is low, lower than a dining chair, and the back leans away rather than standing upright, so it is a chair to read in rather than one to work at. It takes the corner of a sitting room, the foot of a bed or a place beside a low table.

The frame is acacia and the leather is buffalo hide, a natural by-product, dyed with vegetables and tree bark. The hide is tan, and in our photographs it reads as a deep chestnut, with the creases and grain of the skin left showing and the tone shifting across the panel. The wood is left in its own colour with knots and figure visible, so no two frames match. There are no cushions.
