Description

Cupolino stacks three elements: a cylindrical column of natural Spanish alabaster, a wider drum of the same stone sitting on top of it like a brim, and a small brass dome capping the whole thing. The lamp measures 250mm across the drum and 250mm tall, so it is almost exactly as wide as it is high, which is what gives it the squat, deliberate proportion the shape depends on.

The brass dome is the detail the design is named for, and it does a job as well as finishing the silhouette: it caps the top of the fitting so light is pushed out through the stone rather than escaping upward. Both the column and the drum glow, so the lamp reads as two lit volumes with a solid metal full stop above them rather than as a shade on a base.

The dome and the internal hardware are brass and both stone elements are cut from natural Spanish alabaster, so the veining differs between the column and the drum on the same lamp, and no two lamps are alike. Lamping is E27 and bulbs are supplied separately, which lets you set the output and colour temperature to suit the room. Rated IP20 for interior use. Because the drum is wider than the column beneath it, the lamp lays a ring of light down onto the surface it stands on as well as glowing outward, which is what makes it usable beside a chair rather than purely decorative. At 250mm it suits a bedside table or the end of a console.
