Description

A wall clock, 50cm across, in cream. At 50cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door. A clock this size works where it will be read from a few feet rather than across a room: a kitchen wall, a hallway, a landing, the space above a desk.

A natural surface lightens or mellows slightly with sunlight over a few years. That is the material ageing rather than the finish failing, and most people prefer it at five years to how it looked at one. The dome is convex rather than flat, so the face catches light from the side as well as the front. It also means the glass stands slightly proud of the rim. Glass reads differently depending on what is behind it, which is why the same piece looks warm against a painted wall and cool against a window. It also means it wants cleaning more often than an opaque finish does.

It hangs on a keyhole. The plate slides down over a screw head and sits flush, so nothing holds the piece off the wall. At this weight an ordinary plug and screw is plenty; the only real care needed is getting the screw position right first time. It runs on 1 1.5 V cell, not included. The dial is marked in plain numerals. At 1.57kg a single hook rated for the weight is enough.

Height matters more than it does with a large one. Hang it where it will actually be glanced at — roughly eye level for someone standing — because a small dial read from an angle is a small dial read badly.
