Description
Connect I L is a wall mirror 150cm high by 101cm wide, printed with a tall black rectangle and a run of brushed marks crossing it. The glass is partly transparent as well as mirrored, so the printed black reads as solid, the mirrored areas reflect, and the wall shows through in between. The marks are printed onto the same sheet that carries the silvering, so they sit in the reflection rather than on a layer above it. The design is by Louise Mertens.
It suits a hallway, a living room or a bathroom, where it is rated to go, and it wants a plain wall, because the piece is already the pattern. It hangs in four directions and each rotation moves the black block to a different edge, which changes the composition more than turning a plain mirror does. At 23kg it is a two person lift onto fixings that reach something solid, and at 3.5cm deep it sits close to the wall. Two screws, washers and plugs are supplied.
The mirror is partially transparent mirrored and printed glass, frameless. Clean it with cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth rather than onto the glass, and take the cloth across the whole sheet rather than stopping at the print, since the transparent areas show marks a mirror would hide. A second composition is made in the same size and technique, and the two are drawn to hang together as a pair as well as separately. Because the wall shows through the clear areas, the wall colour behind is part of the piece rather than a backdrop to it. Seven year warranty, made in Belgium.

Frequently Asked
Can you see through it?
In places. The glass is partly transparent as well as mirrored, so the wall shows through between the printed and silvered areas.
Is the black printed or painted?
Printed onto the same sheet that carries the silvering, so it sits inside the reflection.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
Yes. It is rated bathroom proof, so steam and humidity are not a problem.
Which way up does it hang?
Any of four, and each rotation moves the black block to a different edge.
Is there a matching one?
Yes. A second composition is made in the same size, drawn to hang as a pair.
