Description

A floor lamp, 42cm wide, in gold. At 42cm wide it is about the width of a laptop.

The finish is the argument here: against a white wall a warm metal reads as jewellery, and against a dark or panelled wall it reads as architectural. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. It is heavier than aluminium, which is a virtue indoors and a consideration if the piece has to be moved often. The shade is included rather than sold alongside, which is worth checking against anything cheaper.

Wiring is for 1 E27 lamp up to 10-12W LED, supplied separately. E27 is the standard screw fitting, so a replacement is a supermarket purchase rather than a specialist one. There is no dimmer, so the character of the light is set by the bulb you choose: 2700K reads warm, 4000K reads cool and clinical. The cable is black, with a foot switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

A felt base means it can sit on a waxed top without leaving a ring. At 2.47kg the weight is in the base, which is what stops a tall lamp walking when it is knocked. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well.
