Description
This silverplated money box takes the shape of a classic little car, all rounded wings, round headlamps, a domed roof and four wheels picked out with raised hubcaps. Its shiny silver finish catches the light from every side, and the detail runs right round the body, from the front bumper to the panelled door with its small handle and the ribbed tail at the back. It is a compact piece, 6cm tall, 6.6cm wide and 12.8cm deep, so it sits happily on a narrow shelf or bedside table without taking over.
We think it makes a thoughtful christening gift, and a lovely present for new parents to keep in the nursery while their little one is small. As the years go on it moves easily to a child's bedroom shelf, where it suits children from the very first months up to around twelve, and becomes a place to drop birthday money, pocket money and the odd coin found down the sofa. Because it is a keepsake rather than a toy, it is best kept up on a shelf or dresser, out of reach of small hands, where its polished silver can be seen and saving towards something special becomes a little ritual.
The car is metal with a silverplated finish, and coins go in through a slot in the roof at the back. When it is time to count the savings, turn it over: a white stopper in the base is marked OPEN and CLOSE, with arrows to show which way to twist, so the money comes out without any fuss and the stopper goes straight back in. To keep the shine, dust it with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Wrapped with a christening card, it makes a charming keepsake to treasure for years.
