Description

This porcelain table lamp brings a quiet Christmas scene to the room, with hanging stars, baubles and snowflakes picked out in tiny perforations across its front. Dotted garlands loop between the strings, and each star and bauble is topped with a small bow. The pattern is pierced through the soft matt white porcelain, so with a bulb lit inside, light shines out through every pinhole and the design glows against the pale body. Switched off, it still looks crisp and clean, a white piece with a fine lace of holes. It stands 23cm tall, 18cm wide and 12.7cm deep, small enough to sit on a side table or shelf without crowding it.

We like it on a sideboard, a hall table or a bedside table, where the pattern can be seen up close, and it suits a living room, bedroom or dining room. The back is left plain, so it can stand near a wall with the decorated face turned to the room. It is for dry rooms indoors. As a seasonal piece it comes out with the rest of the Christmas decorations and earns its place as a working lamp through the darker evenings of the festive weeks. It also makes a thoughtful Christmas gift, easy to wrap and welcome in almost any home.

The lamp is made from porcelain and runs from a standard UK plug at 240V, so it is ready for any ordinary socket. It takes a bulb with an E14 cap of no more than 25W, so check the cap and wattage when you choose one. A small switch on the white cable turns it on and off without reaching inside. To care for it, switch off, unplug and let it cool, then dust with a soft dry cloth. Set it among white and silver decorations or a little fresh greenery and it becomes the gentle centre of a festive shelf.
