Choice Plus Digital Room Thermostat - Silver

The Sangamo Choice Plus is a battery-powered digital room thermostat with a rotary dial interface and an LCD temperature display. An electronic sensor measures room temperature and feeds Time Proportional and Integral (TPI) control logic that cycles the boiler on and off in shorter bursts as the set temperature is approached, reducing overshoot and improving heating efficiency compared to simple on/off thermostats.

Designed for installation in living rooms, hallways and other primary living spaces, the thermostat controls gas, oil and electric boilers via a volt-free 3A contact. The dial sets the target temperature between 5°C and 30°C, and a comfort/economy toggle allows a pre-set temperature drop (typically 3-4°C) for night-time or away-from-home periods without needing to manually re-adjust the dial. The on/off switch provides manual override when heating is not required.

The silver faceplate measures 105mm wide by 92mm tall and projects 40mm from the wall once mounted. The unit runs on two AA batteries (supplied), with a low-battery indicator on the LCD giving advance warning before replacement is needed. Frost protection automatically activates the boiler if room temperature drops below 5°C, preventing pipe freeze in unoccupied properties or during extended cold spells.

What is TPI control and how does it improve efficiency?

Time Proportional and Integral control cycles the boiler on and off in shorter bursts as the room approaches the set temperature, rather than running continuously until the target is reached and then switching off. This reduces temperature overshoot and prevents the room from swinging between too hot and too cold, which saves energy and maintains more consistent comfort.

What does the comfort/economy mode do?

The comfort/economy toggle allows a pre-set temperature reduction (typically 3-4°C) without manually turning the dial. This is useful for night-time setback or when leaving the house for a few hours, reducing heating demand without losing the main temperature setting on the dial.

How is it wired to the boiler?

How long do the batteries last?

Battery life depends on usage and the number of heating cycles per day, but typical life is 12-18 months on two AA alkaline batteries. The LCD displays a low-battery warning well before the batteries are exhausted, giving time to replace them without losing thermostat function.
