Description

Sold as a base without a shade, this one wears an antique brass finish over a round foot 16cm across, rising to 45cm overall. An E27 lampholder sits at the top waiting for whichever shade you settle on, and the flex carries an inline switch, so the light is turned on where you are sitting rather than at the socket. Fit a dimmable lamp, pair it with a compatible dimmer, and it will dim. We like the shape bare, before a shade goes on: rounded, low-key and warm in tone.

At this height it works as a bedside lamp, on a hall console, or as a matching pair flanking a sofa where you want the light pooling low. It gives ambient light rather than anything directional, so a lined shade will throw a soft wash upwards and a pool down onto the table below. Buying the base on its own suits anyone who already owns a shade they are fond of, or who wants one shade shape repeated through a room in different colours. We would fit an LED lamp here and choose its shape to suit the shade, since a wide drum forgives more than a narrow one.
