Flex you can leave on show. The outer braid here is a jute brown, a soft earthy shade closer to natural fibre than to chocolate, and the twisted make-up gives it a slight rope-like turn along its length. Three cores sit inside at 0.75mm, so it copes with a standard pendant or a lamp rewire, and it is VDE approved. We sell it by the metre, and however many metres you order arrive as one continuous run rather than short cut pieces, which matters when the drop is a long one.

It earns its keep anywhere the cable is part of the look: a bare lamp pendant over a kitchen island, a cluster of drops in a stairwell, or a shade hung low beside a bed. This is the one we reach for when an old table or floor lamp is coming back into use and the original flex has gone stiff and unlovely. It suits makers, restorers and anyone assembling a light from separate parts, and the earthy tone sits happily with brass, raw oak, terracotta and bare plaster walls.

The braid is woven tightly over the insulated cores, which keeps the twist neat and stops the covering shifting as the cable is handled. Keep it dry, as this is flex for ordinary indoor rooms rather than a porch, a shower zone or anywhere it might be rained on. Dust settles on textile braid more readily than on smooth PVC, so with the power off at the switch, draw a dry cloth down the length now and again. It carries a one year warranty. How thick is the finished cable?

The overall diameter is 5.3mm, measured across the braided outer, so it passes through most standard cord grips and ceiling rose entries designed for braided flex.

What do the three cores mean?

There are three conductors of 0.75mm each: live, neutral and earth. That makes it the right choice for a lamp or fitting that needs an earth connection, rather than a two core flex.

Is it sold in fixed 1m pieces?

No. The price shown is per metre, and if you order several metres they are supplied as one continuous length.

How should I clean the braid?

Switch the light off at the wall first, then run a dry or barely damp cloth along the cable. Avoid solvents and household sprays, as they can mark the woven covering.

Can I use it outdoors?

It is rated for dry indoor use only, so keep it away from porches, bathrooms and anywhere it could be splashed.

Does the colour vary?

Jute brown is a natural-looking earthy brown. As with any woven textile, the shade can read a little warmer or cooler depending on the light in the room.
