Description

Cascatella takes its name from the waterfall, and the construction earns it. Dozens of hexagonal tiles of natural Spanish alabaster overlap in descending tiers to form a domed body, and above them a dense curtain of fine brass chains falls from a square canopy, each chain ending in a small brass ball. The canopy is 700mm square and the whole assembly drops 1500mm, so the chains make up rather more of the fitting than the stone does.

The tiles are laid like scales, each tier stepping inboard of the one above, so the dome narrows as it descends and closes at the bottom. Light from the integrated LED inside the body passes through the overlaps as much as through the tiles themselves, which puts a bright seam along every joint and stops the dome reading as one solid mass. Unlit it is a pale stone artichoke; lit, it separates into hundreds of edges.

The chains, balls and canopy are brass, the internal structure is stainless steel, and every tile is cut from natural Spanish alabaster, so the veining differs across the dome and no two chandeliers are alike. At 700mm across it centres over a dining table or a stairwell landing without needing double height. Rated IP20 for interior use. The chains are what make it work under a normal ceiling: they carry the height, so the stone body can sit low without the fitting looking stunted. Their density also means it reads as a column of brass from across a room and only resolves into stone as you approach.
