Description

A side table, 59cm tall, in graphite. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 40cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Height decides whether a side table is used: too low and a mug is a stretch, too high and it fights the arm of the chair. This one sits where most sofas and armchairs want it.

Silver and chrome sit comfortably with grey, blue and black schemes where a warm metal would fight them. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. Glass borrows its colour from whatever sits behind it, so the same piece looks warmer against a painted wall than against a window. It shows dust sooner than an opaque finish, and cleans in seconds. Everything loosens with use. A yearly check of the fixings takes a minute and is the difference between a piece that stays square and one that develops a lean it never loses.
