Description

Calera cradles an ovoid of natural Spanish alabaster in a shallow curved brass sling that wraps its lower half and holds it flat to the wall. The stone is left roughly faceted rather than polished smooth, so the surface breaks into planes that each take the light at their own angle, and the outline reads as a hand worked egg rather than a turned shade. The fitting is 150mm wide and 280mm tall.

An integrated LED behind the stone draws 5W and lights it from the back, so the ovoid glows most strongly through its thinnest facets and the brass sling stays dark against it. Because the whole fitting sits close to the wall with no arm or stem, it works where there is very little depth to give: beside a door, along a narrow landing, or in a pair flanking a bed where a projecting sconce would be in the way.

The sling is solid copper finished in brass and the ovoid is cut from natural Spanish alabaster, so the faceting, the veining and the way the light breaks across the planes are unique to each stone. No two are alike. At 280mm it is a quiet fitting rather than a centrepiece, and it reads best where the wall behind it is plain. Rated IP20 for interior use. Because there is no arm, it reads almost as a wall mounted object rather than as a light, which is what lets it sit on a wall that already carries pictures or panelling.

Why is the stone faceted rather than smooth?

It is left roughly worked on purpose. The facets break the surface into planes that each take the light at their own angle, which is what stops it reading as a turned or moulded shade.
