Description

A table runner 230cm long and 50cm wide, handwoven in a linen and cotton herringbone whose zigzag shows plainly in the weave. Narrow dark navy stripes run the length of it at even intervals, broken into short dashes where the herringbone crosses them, and a wide clay band runs the same way near each long edge. The pattern reads the same on the reverse as it does on the face.

At 230cm the runner lies down the length of a six or eight seat table and still falls over both ends. The 50cm width leaves the table showing on either side of it rather than covering it, and because the stripes run with the length of the table, place settings sit between them rather than across them. On a shorter table it simply hangs further down at each end.

The fabric is 68 per cent linen and 32 per cent cotton, woven on traditional looms. The yarns are dyed before weaving rather than the finished length being printed, which is why the stripes carry through to the reverse. The herringbone interlaces the fibres in a zigzag, which is what gives the runner its weight and its resistance to wear. Buna also runs to a pair of placemats in the same clay.
