Description

The Bulciago is a ceiling pendant light with a rounded smoked glass shade, 35cm in diameter, hung on a slim black cord from a round black ceiling canopy. The glass is smoked at the top and fades to clear towards the base, so the bulb glows softly through the darker upper half while light passes more freely through the clear lower edge. The body is black steel, and the light measures 150cm in overall height. It takes one E27 bulb of up to 40W, which is not included, leaving the choice of bulb to you. It is rated IP20, which settles where it goes: indoors, in dry rooms.

We like it hung singly over a dining table or a kitchen island, where its 35cm width gives the table a clear centre without crowding the space, or in a pair or a row along a longer table. It also suits a hallway, a landing or a living room that needs a central light with more character than a plain shade. The smoked upper half cuts glare for anyone sitting beneath it, while the clear base lets light reach the table. A decorative filament bulb works well here, since the lower half of the glass leaves it on view.

The canopy, cord and the cap that tops the shade are black, matching the black steel body, so the glass is the only part that changes tone. There is no switch on the light itself: it is switched at the wall, like most ceiling lights. It is a wired-in mains light running on 220-240V, 50/60Hz, so it should be installed by a qualified electrician, and the installation instructions come as a download. Buy an E27 bulb of 40W or less in good time, so the light is ready to use as soon as it is fitted.
