Description

A rug 200 by 300cm, braided by hand from hemp. The fibre is spun into a rope and coiled round on itself in concentric rectangles that work outwards from the middle to a plain braided border at the edge, and the rows are stitched together where they meet. The colour is a warm natural gold that shifts from band to band as the fibre does, and the surface is flat and textured rather than piled. It is 2cm thick.

At 200 by 300cm this covers the floor in front of a three-seat sofa with room for a chair alongside. It is 2cm thick and weighs 14.2kg. The braided rows run round the rug rather than along it, so the texture reads the same from every side.

The rug is hemp throughout. Hemp spins into a strong, hard-wearing thread and grows without pesticides, its density of growth leaving little room for weeds. Because the fibre is natural, the tone shifts from coil to coil and no two rugs are alike. The same braided hemp is also made as a 180cm round rug, a floor runner and a table runner.

Frequently Asked

What size is it?

200 by 300cm, and 2cm thick.

What is it made from?

Hemp, braided by hand into a rope and coiled into concentric rectangles.

Does it come in other sizes?

The same braided hemp is also made as a 180cm round rug, a floor runner and a table runner.

Will every rug be the same?

Not exactly. Hemp is a natural fibre, so the tone shifts from coil to coil and no two rugs are alike.

How should it be looked after?

Blot spills straight away with a clean sponge or cloth. Vacuum it carefully, and not with a rotating brush head, which will damage the fibres. It can be cleaned professionally. Some shedding of fibre is to be expected, and the colour may fade in direct sunlight.
