An ornament, 40cm tall, in black. At 32cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A piece like this needs air around it more than it needs a large surface. Set alone on a shelf it reads as chosen; crowded in with books and frames it reads as clutter.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Mango is a fast-growing hardwood with a pronounced, irregular grain and a natural colour range from pale honey to deep chocolate within a single board. That variation is the material, not a defect. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. It is heavier than aluminium, which is a virtue indoors and a consideration if the piece has to be moved often.

Buy it for the outline rather than the subject. A form you like the shape of holds up across a room and across a few years of looking at it, where a subject you like the idea of usually does not.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
