Description

A square cushion cover 50cm by 50cm, flat woven in jute and wool with no pile on the surface. The ground is undyed jute, coarse and visibly ribbed, and the pattern is worked in moss green: two large stepped medallions across the top, three smaller ones through the middle, and two more along the bottom, with a solid green bar running the full width between the bands. A narrow green border frames all four sides and the edge itself is whipped in the same yarn.

Fifty centimetres square is the size a sofa cushion is usually cut to, so this one sits at the back of a group rather than in front of it. Jute makes a coarser and firmer face than a cotton weave, and at 0.46kg the cover has noticeable weight for its size. The green is heathered rather than laid in flat, which keeps it from reading as a block of colour against grey or natural linen.

The yarn is jute and wool, flat woven by the kilim method, in which the warp and the weft are interlocked tightly enough to leave no pile on the face. The pattern is woven in rather than printed on. This is the outer cover; feather cushion inners are made separately.
