Description

The Beru in the large size is a handwoven rattan lampshade shaped like a bottle: a full rounded body with a tall narrow neck rising from the top of it. The neck is woven tight, ring above ring; the body is an open lattice of crossing canes with gaps wide enough to see straight through. The rattan is left natural and the canes vary from pale straw to a deeper brown across a single shade. It measures 66cm tall and 51cm across.

At 51cm across this is a shade that has to be seen whole, so it wants height above it and space around it: a stairwell, a high ceilinged room, or a dining table where the drop can be set low without anyone having to look past it. The open weave leaves the bulb visible and throws a net of shadow onto the ceiling and the walls, which needs a surface within reach to land on. It is made for ceiling use only and will not sit on a lamp base. It weighs 1.7kg.

The shades are woven by hand in Indonesia using the techniques the same workshops use for baskets, so the lattice is irregular by nature and no two are spaced alike. The Beru range also holds a small size, 47cm tall and 39cm across. No fitting, flex or bulb is included.
