A wide drum in silver leaf, lined in white, sits over a frosted acrylic diffuser that closes the underside completely. Five E27 lampholders are held above it, so what reaches the room is one even sheet of light rather than a scatter of bright spots. At 60cm across, the shade is broad enough to hold its own in a large room, while the fitting itself stays tight to the ceiling instead of dropping into the space below.

We reach for this one on landings, in wide hallways and in bedrooms where a pendant would hang too low, and it earns its place over a dining table in a room with tight headroom. A full set of lamps behind acrylic gives it real output for something so shallow, which suits open plan kitchens and sitting rooms that would otherwise need a second fitting overhead. It will dim, given lamps made for dimming and a matching dimmer on the wall, so the light can drop back to something quieter in the evening. Warm white GLS lamps give the softest result through the diffuser.

The shade is a silver leaf laminate over a white inner face, and the diffuser is frosted acrylic, so the two surfaces want different treatment: a soft brush or dry cloth across the shade, and a cloth wrung out almost dry on the acrylic once the lamps have gone cold. Keep water off the leaf finish, and skip solvents entirely. It suits dry rooms only, so a shower room or a covered porch is the wrong home for it. The fitting stands 22cm deep, and it carries a one year warranty. How big is the shade?

The drum measures 600mm in diameter and 220mm deep, so allow a clear 60cm circle on the ceiling and expect it to sit close against it.

What lamps does it take, and how many?

Five E27 lamps, up to 20W each. LED GLS A60 lamps are the recommended choice and they are supplied separately.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided the lamps are dimmable and the dimmer is compatible with them. No dimmer is supplied with the fitting.

What is the diffuser made from?

Frosted acrylic. It spreads the output from the lamps above into an even glow and hides them from view when the fitting is lit.

How do I clean the silver leaf shade?

Dust it with a soft dry cloth or a clean brush. The leaf finish should not be dampened, and no cleaning sprays or solvents should touch it.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is IP20 rated and belongs in dry indoor rooms such as hallways, bedrooms and dining rooms.
