Banyan 8 Light E14 Semi Flush Ceiling Light 59cm - Satin Nickel

Eight slender arms reach out from a central stem here, each one ending in an E14 candle socket, and the whole frame carries a satin nickel finish with a low brushed sheen rather than a mirror shine. At 59cm wide it is broader than it is deep, holding close to the ceiling instead of dropping down into the room. It comes without shades, so the candle lamps sit in open view along the arms and the shape of the frame does the decorative work.

This is one for rooms where light needs to spread sideways rather than hang: a dining table under a modest ceiling, a wide landing, a square hallway, a bedroom where a long drop would be in the way. We reach for it when the chandelier shape is wanted and the headroom is not there. The many small lamps give an even wash across a room rather than one bright point overhead. A chain is supplied at 1.5m, so it can also be hung lower over a table where that suits the room better. Dimming is possible if you fit dimmable lamps and pair them with a compatible dimmer; neither is included with the fitting.

The finish runs across the arms, the centre and the lamp holders alike, which keeps the frame reading as a single piece rather than a set of parts. Dust it with a dry cloth, working outwards along each arm once the lamps have cooled, and keep polishes and creams away, as they will dull satin plating over time. It carries a one year warranty. We keep it in satin nickel, and it sits comfortably with brushed metal switch plates and door furniture. Candle lamps are not included, and we would choose clear glass ones where you want sparkle from the exposed sockets, or opaque white where the room needs the glare taken off.

What lamps does it take, and how many?

It takes eight E14 candle lamps, C35 shape, and LED candles are the sensible choice. Maximum rating is 20W per lamp. Lamps are supplied separately.

How far down does it hang?

The body itself stands 340mm tall, and the fitting can sit at a minimum drop of 450mm or be extended to a maximum of 1900mm using the 1.5m chain supplied.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable LED candle lamps and a dimmer switch rated for them. No dimmer is included.

Does it come with shades?

No. It is supplied as a bare frame with the eight sockets on view, so the lamps you choose set the look.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and belongs in dry rooms such as dining rooms, bedrooms, landings and hallways.

How do I keep the satin nickel looking right?

A dry, soft cloth over the arms and holders is enough. Avoid metal polish, sprays and anything abrasive, which will mark the satin plating.
