Eight slender arms spread from a central hub, each turning upward to hold a candle lamp in open view. The frame is finished in matt black throughout, so the fitting reads as a fine dark tracery against a pale ceiling rather than a solid mass. At 59cm across it covers a good width, and the holders take E14 candle lamps, which we would choose in clear glass to keep the look light.

We reach for this where a room wants light spread across a broad area rather than gathered into one bright point: over a long dining table, in a hallway with a bit of ceiling height, or in a sitting room where a single pendant would leave the corners dim. The chain lets you set the hang, tucked up close to the ceiling in a lower room or dropped further down where there is height to play with. Fit dimmable candle lamps and pair them with a compatible dimmer, and the whole thing can be taken down to a soft glow for the evening.

The arms and hub are metal, coated in a flat black that shows fingerprints far less than a gloss would. To keep it looking right, run a dry duster along each arm every few weeks and lift dust from the lamp holders with a soft brush, with the power off and everything cool to the touch. It carries a one year warranty. With no shades in the way the lamps do the decorating, so it is worth spending a little on the ones you like: clear candles for sparkle, or opal if you would rather take the edge off the glare. Eight in total, each on an E14 socket. Candle lamps in the C35 shape suit it best, and LED candles are what we would fit, rated up to 20W each.

Can I hang it lower than a semi flush height?

Yes. The supplied 1.5m chain gives a drop from 450mm at its shortest up to 1900mm, so you can sit it close to the ceiling or bring it down over a table.

What are the overall dimensions?

It measures 590mm across with a body height of 340mm, and weighs 5kg.

Is it dimmable?

The fitting will dim, but only with dimmable lamps and a suitable dimmer, neither of which is supplied.

Is it suitable for a bathroom or a covered porch?

No. It is intended for dry rooms indoors, so kitchens, hallways, dining rooms and bedrooms rather than bathrooms or anywhere exposed to damp.

How should I clean the black finish?

Dust it dry with a soft cloth or brush. Avoid sprays and solvents, as these can dull a matt coating over time.
