Description

A tall, plain column in matt black, this one is supplied without a shade so you can pick the covering that suits the room. Three E14 holders sit together at the top, drawing light from candle lamps, and a foot switch on the flex keeps switching down at floor level rather than up under the shade. The base measures 30cm across, giving it a steady footing on carpet or boards, and the column rises to 1.6m. With suitable lamps and a separate dimmer, it will dim.

We reach for this where a table lamp cannot lift light high enough: the corner of a sitting room, behind a wing chair, or at the end of a sofa where a reading light earns its keep. Seated, the lamps sit above eye level, so light falls onto a book rather than glaring back at you. It suits anyone who already has a shade in mind, or who wants to match a floor lamp to curtains and cushions they are keeping. Small candle lamps are what we would fit, and the foot switch means no groping about for a rocker on the flex.

The build is straightforward: a slender upright on a weighted foot, finished in matt black with a low sheen that shrugs off fingerprints better than gloss would. It is double insulated, and it carries a one year warranty. Keep it looking well by running a duster down the column and over the foot switch, with the lamps off and cool before you touch them. We like it as a base to build on: a linen drum keeps things calm, a pale card shade throws more light down, and a black shade in the same finish reads as one piece. The shade and lamps are chosen separately.
