Description

The large wide Baba is a lamp base of clear recycled glass blown into a low, broad bulb, 33cm across and 41cm tall, that swells out near the base and draws in sharply to a narrow neck. The hammered surface is at its most obvious on this one: the dents run right round the widest part where there is most glass to take them, and each one carries its own highlight. A chrome collar caps the neck and carries a black lampholder with a shade ring, and the brown flex runs up inside the glass in full view.

This is a base only: no shade and no bulb. Where the tall Babas stand up, this one spreads, so it fills a shelf or a sideboard laterally and looks balanced under a wide shade rather than a narrow one. It is the heaviest of the clear three at 2.76kg, which keeps it steady on a surface people pass. It takes an E27 bulb, the cord runs 2.5m, the plug is UK and EU, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The glass is recycled and hand blown, and the hammered surface is made while the glass is still molten, so no two bases carry the same pattern of dents. The collar and stem are chrome. The Baba range runs to eleven lamp bases in clear, green and burnt amber, in tall and wide shapes and in two sizes. Neither a shade nor a bulb is included.

Frequently Asked

Does it come with a shade?

No. It is the base only, with a black lampholder and a shade ring on top. Supplied without a shade.

What is the maximum bulb wattage?

It takes an E27 screw fitting. Fit no more than the maximum wattage marked on the lampholder.

How is it different from the large tall?

The large tall is 50cm high and 24cm across against 41cm and 33cm here. This one is the wider and the heavier of the two.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it and take any shade off, then wipe the glass with a soft dry cloth in a circular motion. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it.
