Description

The AV:Link Toslink to Toslink cable is a 1m fibre optic audio cable with gold-plated optical connectors on both ends, designed for digital audio transmission between compatible devices. Toslink (also called optical S/PDIF) carries uncompressed stereo or multi-channel audio as pulses of light through a 2.2mm diameter fibre core, immune to electrical interference that can affect copper cables.

Common applications include connecting CD players to AV receivers, soundbars to TVs, gaming consoles to audio systems, or any pair of devices with Toslink optical outputs and inputs positioned within 1m of each other. The cable is particularly suited to desktop setups, compact home theatre systems and equipment racks where components are placed side by side. The 1m length minimises cable excess in tight installations while remaining flexible enough to route around corners without kinking.

The gold-plated tips on each connector reduce surface oxidation and improve light transmission at the connection points. The 2.2mm cable diameter gives enough flexibility to position equipment without the cable tangling or creating stress on the optical ports. At 120g, the cable is light enough not to pull on the connectors when routed vertically or suspended between devices.

What's the difference between Toslink and a standard 3.5mm audio cable?

Toslink transmits digital audio as light pulses through fibre, carrying uncompressed stereo or multi-channel surround sound without interference. A 3.5mm cable is analogue and carries only stereo audio as electrical signal, which can pick up interference from nearby cables and equipment. For devices with both options, Toslink typically provides higher fidelity and supports surround formats.

Can this cable carry surround sound formats like Dolby Digital or DTS?

Yes. Toslink supports compressed multi-channel formats including Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS. It does not support high-resolution formats like Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio, which require HDMI.

Is 1m long enough for a TV to soundbar connection?

It depends on the layout. If the soundbar sits directly below the TV and the Toslink ports are on the back or side of each device, 1m is typically sufficient. For wall-mounted TVs with soundbars placed on furniture below, measure the actual cable run required — a 1.5m or 2m cable may be safer.

Do the connectors have protective caps?

Most Toslink cables, including this AV:Link model, ship with removable plastic caps on each connector to protect the optical tips during storage and transport. Remove the caps before connecting.
