Description

The AV:Link Toslink to Toslink cable is a 2.5m fibre optic lead with standard Toslink connectors at both ends, each finished with gold-plated tips. The 2.2mm diameter cable carries digital audio signals optically rather than electrically, making it immune to electromagnetic interference that can affect copper cables in the same cable run.

Designed for short-range digital audio connections, the 2.5m length suits soundbars positioned near TVs, gaming consoles connected to AV receivers, multimedia PCs linked to active speakers, and DVD or Blu-ray players feeding digital audio into home theatre systems. Both connectors use the standard square Toslink profile compatible with SPDIF optical ports on most consumer audio equipment manufactured since the 1990s.

The thin 2.2mm cable provides flexibility for routing behind furniture or along skirting boards without the stiffness of thicker cables, while the fibre core maintains signal integrity over the 2.5m run. The gold-plated connector tips resist oxidation at the point of contact with the device ports, maintaining a clean optical path. At 200g the cable is light enough to avoid pulling on rear panel connections when routed vertically.

Frequently Asked

What devices use Toslink connections?

Toslink optical audio ports appear on soundbars, AV receivers, televisions, gaming consoles (PlayStation, Xbox), multimedia PCs with optical outputs, DVD and Blu-ray players, and some active speaker systems. The square connector profile is standard across all SPDIF optical implementations.

Does fibre optic cable give better sound quality than coaxial?

Both Toslink fibre optic and coaxial digital cables carry the same S/PDIF signal format, so the audio data is identical. Fibre optic has the advantage of complete electrical isolation between source and destination, eliminating ground loop hum and electromagnetic interference. In electrically noisy environments or long cable runs near mains power, this can make an audible difference.

Can the cable be bent around tight corners?

The 2.2mm diameter allows moderate bending, but fibre optic cables should not be bent below the minimum bend radius of approximately 25mm (roughly the diameter of a £2 coin). Sharp kinks or tight loops can fracture the fibre core and cause signal loss.

Is the cable directional?

No. Toslink to Toslink cables are bidirectional and work equally well in either orientation. Either end can connect to the source or destination device.
