Description
Attitude is a wall mirror 160cm high by 59cm wide, built from two layers of glass carrying vertical strips that are in turn clear, silvered and printed black. Seen straight on the strips line up and the piece reads as a plain mirror. Move to one side and they slide out of register, the black strips come forward and the reflection breaks into bands, so what the mirror shows depends on where the viewer stands. The frame is solid oak stained black, with the grain left visible. The design is by James Van Vossel.
That shift is the reason to hang it where people pass rather than where they stand still: a hallway, a landing, the wall beside a door. It hangs in four directions, so the strips can run vertically or turn to lie across, which changes the effect from a tall banding to a horizontal one. At 18kg it is a comfortable two person lift and at 3cm deep it sits close to the wall; two hooks with wall plugs are supplied and nothing needs assembling. It is not rated for bathroom use, so keep it to dry rooms. Light matters more than usual here, because the black strips only read as black where there is something brighter beside them to contrast against, so a wall with daylight across it does more for the piece than a dim corner.
The glass is partially transparent, printed and mirrored, and the frame is solid oak in a black stain that leaves the grain showing. Clean the glass with cleaner sprayed onto a soft cloth, working down the strips rather than across them, and dust the oak dry. Seven year warranty, made in Europe.

Frequently Asked
Why does the reflection change as I move?
The strips on the two glass layers slide out of register as your angle changes, so the black bands come forward and break up the reflection.
What is the frame made of?
Solid oak with a black stain that leaves the wood grain visible.
How many directions does it hang in?
Four, so the strips can run upright or across.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
No. It is not rated for bathroom use, so keep it to dry rooms.
What size is it and what does it weigh?
59cm wide by 160cm high, weighing 18kg.
