A table lamp, 35cm wide, in natural. At 35cm wide it is about the width of a laptop.

A natural surface lightens or mellows slightly with sunlight over a few years. That is the material ageing rather than the finish failing, and most people prefer it at five years to how it looked at one. The texture is in the surface rather than printed on it, so it catches light at the ridges and shades in the hollows. A flat finish reads as one colour from any distance; a textured one reads as several. It arrives complete with its shade, which is not always true at this price.

It takes 1 E27 screw-fit bulb up to 10-12W LED. E27 is the commonest fitting on any supermarket shelf, so replacements are never a hunt. There is no dimmer, so the character of the light is set by the bulb you choose: 2700K reads warm, 4000K reads cool and clinical. The cable is black, with an in-line switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling.

A felt base means it can sit on a waxed top without leaving a ring. It weighs 3.93kg, which is enough to stay put when the flex is tugged. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

The light you actually see is the light that comes THROUGH the shade, not the light from the bulb. That is why the same bulb reads warm behind a cream fabric and cold behind a white one. Bought as a pair they read as deliberate rather than repetitive, and at this width two sit either side of a bed without taking the table over.
