Description

The Anbu is a dining table in mango wood, 220cm long, 90cm deep and 76cm to the top. The top is a plain rectangle with a shallow lip at its edge, carried on a narrow apron that runs round beneath it. Four legs stand at the corners, round in section and tapering as they drop to the floor. The wood keeps its own pale tone and the top is sandblasted, which leaves a light texture across the surface.

At 220cm this is the longer of the two Anbu mango tables, and it wants a room that can take it: a dining room rather than a kitchen corner, with space to pull chairs back on all four sides. The legs stand at the corners rather than part way along, so chairs can go anywhere down the length and nobody sits astride a leg. At 90cm deep there is room to lay places down both sides and still keep a run clear down the middle for serving.

The table is mango wood throughout. Mango is a by-product of fruit growing in India, cut for timber once the trees have stopped bearing. Each one is made by hand and the legs are turned individually, so the grain and the figure differ from table to table. The Anbu range runs to a smaller mango table at 180cm long, and to a washed walnut acacia line with its own dining tables, chairs, a bed and a wardrobe. The table is sold on its own.

Frequently Asked

What size is the smaller Anbu mango table?

180cm long, against 220cm on this one. Both are 90cm deep and 76cm tall.

What is mango wood?

A hardwood from the mango tree. The trees are grown for fruit first and cut for timber only once they stop bearing, so the wood comes out of the fruit crop rather than a plantation grown for timber.

Will every table look the same?

Not exactly. Each table is made by hand and the grain differs from one to the next, so the figure across the top will be its own.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it over with a soft dry cloth to lift dust and moisture, always along the direction of the grain. Mild soap and water can be used but sparingly, since too much water will damage the finish. Deal with spills straight away, stand mats and coasters under anything wet or hot, and keep rubber and plastic off the surface, as both can react with the finish over time.

Where should it not go?

Out of strong direct sunlight, which fades the wood, and out of a room that swings between extremes of heat and humidity, since those changes can crack or split it.
