Description

The Amandi is a lidded laundry basket woven from rattan, 71cm tall and 44cm across. The body is built on thick vertical staves bound with finer rattan, and it swells out from a narrow base to a wide belly before drawing in again below the rim, so the shape is closer to a pot than to a box. The lid sits down into the neck and carries a bent rattan loop to lift it by.

At 71cm this is about hip height. It sits on a bathroom floor. That is the setting it is made for, though it stands as well at the end of a run of bedroom furniture or on a landing. The lid drops into the neck rather than sitting over it, and it keeps the contents out of sight.

The basket is rattan, grown and woven in Indonesia and sustainably cultivated, with a wax finish that protects it from moisture. Rattan has a long history on the islands, woven into apais, the decorative mats that dressed traditional long houses, and into baskets made for carrying and for storing food. In some areas its value as a crop has held back logging and slowed deforestation. The Amandi range also holds a toilet roll holder.
