A console table, 81cm tall, in clear. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 100cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. It is also the most-looked-at surface in a house, because it sits at the point people arrive. What goes on it matters as much as the table.

Silver and chrome sit comfortably with grey, blue and black schemes where a warm metal would fight them. Stainless steel resists corrosion through its own chemistry rather than a coating, so there is no finish to chip and nothing underneath waiting to rust when it does. Glass borrows its colour from whatever sits behind it, so the same piece looks warmer against a painted wall than against a window. It shows dust sooner than an opaque finish, and cleans in seconds.
