Description

A flat woven rug of jute and cotton, 180cm long and 120cm across. The field is undyed jute laid in fine bands that run the short way over the rug and shift between straw and a darker tan as the fibre varies along its length. Each of the two short ends carries a rust coloured border, a narrow band of small repeated motifs set inside a wider band of hooked diamonds and eight pointed figures on a paler ground. Beyond the border at each end is a row of long cream cotton tassels.

It lies in front of a sofa with an armchair to one side. At 180 by 120cm it covers the floor between a sofa and a hearth or sits under a low table, and at 1cm thick it lies close to the floor. The tassels fall at the two short ends only, so those are the ends that read as the finished edge and are worth turning towards the room.

Jute and cotton are woven together on a traditional Indian handloom, the jute for hard wear and the cotton for softness. Jute is a rain fed crop that needs little in the way of fertiliser or pesticide, and the fibre spins into a strong, durable thread. Akari is also made 150 by 240cm, and as a runner 66 by 200cm.

Frequently Asked

What size is the rug?

180cm by 120cm, and 1cm thick.

Is it made in other sizes?

Yes. Akari is also made 150 by 240cm, and as a runner 66 by 200cm.

What is the border?

A rust coloured band at each of the two short ends, worked in a traditional Indian pattern, with cream cotton tassels beyond it.

Does it shed?

Some shedding of fibre is to be expected from the natural materials.

How should it be looked after?

Blot spills straight away with a sponge or a cloth. Take care when vacuuming, and do not use a vacuum with a rotating brush, which may damage the fibres. It can be professionally cleaned, and colours may fade in direct sunlight.
