Description

The Ajaya is a rattan chair with a curved back and looped arms. The back is a close rank of upright canes held by three horizontal rails, bowed round so that the sides come forward past the shoulders. The frame is a thicker rattan pole bent into the back and the arms in one continuous run, and every crossing on the chair is wrapped in a flat pale binding of natural rawhide. The legs splay outward and are tied low down by a crossed stretcher, bound again where the two pieces meet.

The seat sits 47cm from the floor and runs 50cm deep, lower and deeper than a dining chair, which is what puts it between a dining chair and a lounger to sit in. It stands 90cm to the top of the back and 61cm across the arms, so it takes the width of a carver at a table. It is suitable for outdoor use, and at 3.42kg it can be carried in one hand, which is what makes it easy to move round a terrace through an afternoon.

The rattan is steamed to soften it and then bent to shape, and the joints are bound with natural rawhide rather than glued or screwed. Rubber stoppers are supplied separately, to be fitted to the base of each foot if you want them: they keep the cane ends off wet ground and stop the feet marking a hard surface.

Frequently Asked

How high is the seat?

47cm from the floor, and 50cm deep.

Can it be left outside?

It is suitable for outdoor use. Store it inside over winter, or cover it over, so it is not left out in the rain.

What holds the joints together?

Natural rawhide, wrapped round each crossing.

How is the rattan curved?

By steaming, which softens the cane enough to bend it to shape.

Is anything supplied with it?

Rubber stoppers, packed separately, which fit to the base of each foot.

How do I look after it?

A soft-bristle brush used regularly will lift built-up dust. Because the material is natural, keep harsh chemical cleaning products away from it.
